Born from the brand’s celebrated Riviera tale, Original revisits Albert Fouquet’s elegant composition that a young American visitor admired and later popularized, a narrative immortalized by the bottle shipped inside hollow books to protect the formula during turbulent times. As the signature pillar of the house, it offers crisp citrus and airy spice over smooth woods for a versatile, well-groomed presence. Albert Fouquet, a Parisian aristocrat’s son and perfume connoisseur, blended personal essences in an upstairs room of his family chateau with help from the butler, Philippe. His signature scent dazzled elite partygoers, yet he refused to commercialize it. In summer 1937 on the French Riviera, he befriended a young American touring in a convertible, John F. Kennedy, who was instantly captivated. Fouquet left him a sample with the note, “In this bottle, you will find the dash of French glamour that your American personality lacks.” From the U.S., John reported its success among friends and asked for eight samples “…and if your production allows, another one for Bob.” Fouquet, aiming to offset shipping costs, prepared a larger box but waited until Philippe found elegant pharmacy glass bottles; he then ordered boxes patterned after JFK’s shirt and labeled everything with John’s request, birthing “EIGHT & BOB.” Soon letters arrived from Hollywood, directors, producers, and actors like Cary Grant and James Stewart having discovered it through John’s well-connected father from his movie-industry ventures. The rise stalled when Fouquet died in a car accident near Biarritz in spring 1939. Philippe fulfilled orders for a few months, then World War II forced him to stop; in final shipments he hid bottles inside hand-cut books to evade Nazi seizure. Decades later, the formula and artisanal process were fully recovered, restoring EIGHT & BOB as an exclusive fragrance favored by stylish men and women.
